Announcing the change, Business Secretary Greg Clark said: "It will ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to remember and honour our heroes of the Second World War and reflect on the sacrifices of a generation."
Sir Andrew Gregory, chief executive of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, said the government's decision was "fitting".

The May Day bank holiday has been moved only once before. It was changed from 1 May to 8 May in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of VE Day.
He added: “VE Day marked an historic moment in not only our nation’s but the world’s history and it is important that we commemorate this great occasion on its 75th anniversary. Honouring those who did their duty, whether on the battlefields of Europe or through their efforts and sacrifices here at home.”

Why is the early may bank holiday moving in 2020 ?
Back in June the government announced the early may bank holiday in 2020 originally set for monday 4 may would be changed to firday 8 may.
The reason for this unusual change in calender dates is for a special reason.The bank holiday will now mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
